CFRP | Carbon Fiber Sheet | Slab Structural Strengthening

Reinforcing slabs with carbon fiber sheet is a fairly new method. It involves bonding high-strength carbon fibers to the structure, and then the material assumes some force, thereby increasing the load-bearing capacity of the structure.

Unlike traditional reinforcement methods for load-bearing building structures, carbon plastic reinforcement does not increase the cross-section of components, which is not only very important for industrial buildings and structures, but most importantly in residential, commercial and administrative construction. The use of carbon fiber reinforced plastics in the reinforcement of buildings greatly reduces the time required to complete the work, and the use of integrated methods has obvious economic effects.

When do you need slab reinforcement?

As time passed, each building structure began to collapse, losing its original properties. If you do not carry out construction work, the end result may lead to global problems and casualties. In this regard, the slabs are continuously inspected and reinforced.

The steel bars of the reinforced concrete floor can restore its integrity, performance and load-bearing capacity.

The most common cause of board failure is corrosion. The rebar will expand and destroy the surrounding concrete. In addition, when corrosion occurs, the cross-section of the rods of the reinforcing frame is reduced, which results in a reduction in the load-bearing capacity of the structure.

It is not always possible to discover the problem for the first time. There are some details that need to be checked carefully. Wear of the slab:

  • Cracks and cracks are formed.

  • Strange spots appear on the ceiling-dark or bright.

  • Chips appear.

  • The problem of plastering the ceiling.

Reinforcement technology of flat-slab floor slab reinforced with carbon fiber sheet

When reinforcing the slab, the builder uses carbon fiber sheet:

1. The carbon fiber is pasted onto the plate at a certain interval from below.

2. If necessary, use a piece of tape-stick it longitudinally on the entire surface.

3. If the slab has ribs, glue the composite material to the bottom of the stiffener. In addition, the supporting part of the structure is reinforced by clamps made of unidirectional tape.

First, the high voltage area must be found, so further work will be done on it. Mark these locations immediately and start preparing the structure. Thoroughly clean these areas to remove the previous surface treatment, paint, dirt, etc. (for this, special grinding equipment is used).

Further work will depend on the initial stage. All rules must be followed, and precision technology must be used for grinding. During the work process, no moisture is allowed; at the end of this stage, dust and dust on the surface should be cleaned.

After preparing the surface, it's the component's turn. The carbon fiber is shipped from the factory in the form of a coiled tube. Before starting, choose a separate place to roll the material, and then cover the area with plastic wrap. Cut the material into pieces of the desired size. In order to adhere to materials and surfaces, a two-component adhesive is used. You can buy all the necessary ingredients at the hardware store.

The following parameters will be checked without fail:

  • Surface uniformity

  • Material strength

  • Surface temperature

  • Lack of dust

  • Humidity;

  • Material integrity.

Features that increase strength through various methods

The increase in carrying capacity will depend on the choice of technology. The choice depends on the materials and characteristics of the building itself. But CFRP is considered to be the most versatile and effective tool for slabs. Depending on the type of board, do the following:

  • By gluing the sheet to the ground from below, the hollow floor slab can be reinforced with carbon fiber materials. It is glued at specific intervals. In this case, several layers of sheet material can be applied, which determines the degree of increase in strength.

  • In a similar manner, the reinforcement of the overall flat plate for overlap occurs, but the carbon sheet is bonded longitudinally on the entire surface. This improves shock resistance.

  • To strengthen the ribbed floor, a carbon composite material is glued to the lower part of the rib. The number of layers determines the degree of magnification. The supporting part of this system is also reinforced with clamps made of unidirectional tape.

What are the benefits of using carbon fiber reinforced slabs?

When reinforced concrete or steel structures are used to reinforce the slab, a large amount of labor is involved, including huge special equipment and workers. In addition, when using these reinforcement methods, contrary to carbon fiber reinforcement, the mass and size of the building are greatly increased. Therefore, the use of carbon fiber has advantages not only economically, but also aesthetically. In addition, in the case of equal volumes of reinforced concrete and steel component composite materials, the former benefits from improving the strength and stability of the slab.
