When it comes to carbon fiber, people can think of planes, tanks, rockets... giving people a sense of distance and mystery.

On October 22, at the China-UK Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Matching Meeting of the "2013 Chongqing Action, an internationally renowned R&D institution", Dr. Jiye Chen from the University of Portsmouth showed the carbon fiber residents only 1/10 of the weight of traditional houses. The picture of the room instantly shortened the distance between carbon fiber and the public.

Glowing clothes, carbon fiber houses, calcium carbonate bone cement... At the meeting, the reporter saw that these high-tech products that can only be seen in science fiction movies on weekdays have now really entered people's lives.

It is understood that since 2011, the Cultural and Education Section of the British Consulate General in Chongqing and the Chongqing Institute of Science and Technology have reached a consensus on jointly promoting cooperation between British higher education institutions and Chongqing’s research institutes, universities, industrial and commercial institutions. The project connection established a cooperative relationship between Chongqing enterprises and British universities.

In May of this year, Chongqing Science and Technology Research Institute and the Office of Sino-British Science and Technology Innovation Program and Queen Mary College in London, UK, after many communications, decided to use the "2013 International Famous R&D Institution Chongqing Action" as an international science and technology cooperation platform to organize a docking event.

After nearly half a year of preparations, at the matchmaking meeting, 10 well-known British universities such as Queen Mary University of London, Portsmouth University, Cardiff University, etc. brought 10 high-tech projects to Chongqing to connect with Chongqing's technology demand institutions.

Carbon fiber reinforced housing construction becomes the future trend

In 2008, the Wenchuan earthquake caused a large number of houses and bridges to collapse, resulting in a large number of casualties. Most of these collapsed houses are made of wood, steel and concrete.

"If carbon fiber reinforced polymer material is used to reinforce the building, it will be stronger and able to deal with earthquakes, tornadoes and other disasters." Chen Jiye said.

According to his introduction, carbon fiber has long been used to make small items such as bicycles or glasses. In fact, carbon fiber can also be "incarnation" as a building material. It can reinforce a strong and durable house, especially after technological reform, it has incredible hardness and flexibility.

At present, in developed countries such as the United States and Germany, carbon fiber has become an ideal reinforcement material for bridge reinforcement and earthquake resistance of buildings due to its high strength performance. "Compared to traditional reinforced concrete houses, the weight of carbon fiber buildings is only 1/10 of traditional houses." Chen Jiye said.

"China has the world's largest civil construction market, and the application of carbon fiber as a reinforcement material will usher in a good market opportunity." Chen Jiye said that in the next ten years, carbon fiber will become a trend in the development of Chinese construction materials.
